------- HISTORY & CULTURE ----------------------------------

Wyoming County has a long and colorful history. Before the White Man came it was the homeland of the Seneca Indians "Keepers of the Western Door" of the Iroquois Federation. Mary Jemison, "The White Woman of the Genesee" was adopted by the Indians after her parents were killed in an Indian raid in Pennsylvania. She lived out her life in what is now Letchworth State Park.

The county has a full array of cultural attractions and activities for those who yearn to learn. History buffs shouldn't miss the Gaslight Village in the hamlet of Wyoming which is still lit by its original gaslights and contains over 70 homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
